https://www.ventrac.com/ On this Project with Ventrac, Aaron takes us behind the scenes to show how a Ventrac 4500 can be used to help out in building a raised garden bed with rocks. The homeowner is adding a second raised bed around part of the perimeter of his current garden. He is doing this for more delicate vegetable growing like lettuce, peppers and plants started from seed. These vegetables need loose soil to germinate and grow young roots.

Aside from the many reasons to grow his own food, this homeowner is choosing to build a raised bed out of rocks. This is something that will allow him to keep gardening for years to come with very little to no maintenance to the bed itself.

With our first step, the main goal is to expose the soil and get most of the grass buried. Aaron switches to the sod cutter attachment to cut into the grass where the bed will be going. This tool allows him to flip the sod over and leave fertile topsoil facing up. Then he will lay weed barrier fabric around the perimeter of the bed as a base for the rocks to sit on which prevents weeds from growing up through the rocks.

Aaron goes off into the woods with the Power Bucket to fetch some nice rock specimens for the raised bed border. The landscape is very uneven and rough, but the oscillation of the tractor keeps the wheels planted and close to the ground. He’s able to retrieve lots of rocks in the thick of the woods and bring them back up the hill to the garden. Aaron explains the ideal way to arrange the rocks so that when the compost and soil is added to the bed, the rocks settle in the proper way.

Then he heads back to the woods and digs out a few loads of topsoil to build a base layer in the raised bed before adding the compost to finish off the project.
