Pursell Farms is a 3,500-acre resort in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Alabama.
The property consists of a golf course, hotel, cottages and cabins, and shooting range. Some of the many activities available on the vast property include hiking, horseback riding, UTV experiences and various fishing, hunting and sport shooting adventures.
Built in 2003, The Farm Links Golf Club is the world’s first and only research and demonstration golf course with over 18 different varieties of grass. 500 acres of Pursell Farms are grounds that the golf and landscape team manage. Steep mountain areas, native tall grasses, ditch banks and aquatics are just some of the obstacles the team is facing daily. The varied landscape requires equipment that can do everything from a versatility standpoint.
They demoed a Ventrac 4500 with Tough Cut Mowing Deck and were able to mow the steep slopes with overgrown brush in a single 8 hour day. Something which previously took excessive man hours to accomplish, they were able to finish with a single operator on a Ventrac.
Soon they realized how valuable the Contour Mowing Deck could be to their operation and began maintaining their bunkers with it. Their labor hours reduced from 40 hours per week to mow the bunkers to 5 hours per week with the Contour Deck.
Other attachments that continue to expand their investment are the Sod Cutter and the Stump Grinder. The team at Farm Links do a lot of their own tree removal and trimming on the property. They discovered how advantageous it was for them to purchase a stump grinder attachment for their Ventrac instead of renting it and they saw an immediate return on their investment.
The addition of Ventrac to the Farm Links Golf Club has been a positive experience. It speeds up productivity and keeps everyone safe. The same machine, used by the same operator with only different attachments is a convenient solution to a problem that most operations face. It is the multi-tool of golf course maintenance equipment. And with dozens of attachments, the hardest part is deciding which attachment to purchase next.

This place is vast. You know you really need something that can do everything. The reason we originally demoed the ventrac was the short staff labor. We were spending so many man-hours weeding the native tees that it was taking us 2 to 3 weeks to do it and the ventrac came in and we mowed all of those areas in an eight-hour day. So we eliminated 90% of our cost weeding those T's. There can be snakes and other hazards so to keep you know boots off the ground as you might say and some of these areas is actually a really good thing. And then we learned that with the contour deck we could mow our bunkers and what was spending us 37 to 40 man-hours a week fly mowing bunkers is now down to five hours man hours a week due to the ventrac. The sod cutter is actually a labor saver because on a typical sod cutter two or three guys bouncing around dragging that machine in this rocky soil that we have versus one man on the ventrac that's doing it probably 90% faster. It speeds everything up. Your productivity just skyrockets when you're not having to fight one of those old-school ones. We do a lot of tree work in house here between tree removal tree maintenance looming up trees we noticed the stump grinder attachment. For what we were going to pay for it was actually one month's rent for the local rental agency that we had been using so it was kind of a no-brainer to what to do there and the ROI was immediate. The ease of being able to drop what you're doing you're done stump grinding all right let's go do some underbrush. The same machine same operator different attachment and goes out and knocks it out. It's nice. It is the multi-tool of golf course maintenance equipment. It is a machine that literally has you know dozens of attachments that the hardest part for me is deciding what attachment I want to purchase next. Because it has saved us so many man-hours and so much labor it's just a bulletproof machine.
